GOCAL is your dog-friendly gateway to SoCal

From dog-friendly patios serving up tail-wagging treats to shopping destinations that welcome pups with open arms and scenic trails perfect for an adventure, there’s no shortage of ways to explore GOCAL with your four-legged sidekick. So leash up, grab some water, and get ready to enjoy the region.

Where is GOCAL exactly?

Greater Ontario California — GOCAL for short — sits about 45 minutes east of Los Angeles at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. The region is built around Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga in San Bernardino County, with easy reach into Riverside County attractions too. Ontario International Airport makes it a surprisingly frictionless jumping-off point for a SoCal road trip with your dog: less traffic than LAX, cheaper parking, and you’re on a trail or a patio within 20 minutes of landing.

Dog-friendly patios in GOCAL

Year-round mild weather means patio season basically never ends. Popping Yolk Café in Ontario welcomes pups on its covered brunch patio; Lazy Dog in Rancho Cucamonga serves one of the region’s rare true dog menus (grilled chicken, pupcups); and El Torito rounds out the list with Mexican classics on a dog-welcoming outdoor patio. Read our full guide to Paws and Patios in GOCAL for more options.

Shopping and strolling at Victoria Gardens

Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga is an outdoor shopping village that welcomes well-behaved pups. Open-air walkways, pet-friendly restaurant patios, and fresh water bowls at many doors make it one of those rare malls where you can actually spend a couple of hours with your dog. Restaurants like The State (whiskey and comfort food) and Paul Martin’s American Grill (farm-to-table grilled salmon and ribs) roll out the red carpet for dogs with pet-friendly patios and occasional treats. Trails for every type of adventurer

The Pacific Electric Inland Empire Trail stretches from Rancho Cucamonga to Claremont — a scenic, paved path across multiple cities that’s ideal for a leisurely walk or jog with your dog. Red Hill Community Park in Rancho Cucamonga has shaded areas, open fields, and a dedicated off-leash dog park. For panoramic views, Mount Rubidoux in Riverside is a popular 3-mile round-trip hike where leashed dogs are welcome on switchbacks that top out at a historic cross with valley-wide vistas. Plan your GOCAL weekend

A good rhythm for a dog-friendly GOCAL weekend: start on a trail in the cooler morning hours, break for brunch on a shaded patio, window-shop at Victoria Gardens during the heat of the afternoon, and settle in at a dog-welcoming dinner spot once the sun drops. The whole region sits on flat ground with easy freeway connections, so you can move between experiences without making your dog sit in a hot car for long stretches.
