For pet parents who love dining out with their pups, GOCAL (Greater Ontario, California) has built a reputation as an easy, under-the-radar pick for dog-friendly patios. With year-round mild weather east of Los Angeles and a dining scene that stretches from Ontario into Rancho Cucamonga, it’s a region where patio season basically never ends.
Here are a few of our favorite spots to eat on a patio with your dog, plus a short guide to making patio dining work for you both.
Brunch with your brunch buddy
Brunch lovers start the day at Popping Yolk Café in Ontario, where pups are welcome on the outdoor patio. The menu leans into creative egg dishes, benedicts, and breakfast cocktails — the kind of place where you can spread out with a coffee and a newspaper while your dog naps at your feet. The covered patio means you’re not captive to unpredictable weather, which matters when you’re traveling with a leash in one hand and a carafe in the other.
Lunch, dinner, and the rare actual dog menu
After a morning of sightseeing or a walk at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, head to Lazy Dog in Rancho Cucamonga for one of the region’s rare true dog menus. Lazy Dog’s patio program isn’t a retrofit — the chain was built around dogs being welcome, and the menu includes grilled chicken, brown rice, and a vanilla ice cream “pupcup” dessert for your four-legged guest. Staff bring out water bowls without being asked, and the patio is roomy enough that two larger dogs can pass each other without a standoff.
Mexican on the patio
For dinner, El Torito serves classic Mexican on a dog-welcoming outdoor patio — margaritas, fresh salsas, and enchilada combos. It’s a reliable SoCal chain with a long history in the Inland Empire, and the outdoor seating tends to be the busiest part of the restaurant on weekends. Call ahead on Friday and Saturday nights to confirm patio availability, especially if you have a larger dog who needs more elbow room.
Patio etiquette for dining with your dog
A few things make patio dining smoother for everyone: walk your dog before sitting down so they’re ready to settle, bring a mat or towel for your dog to lie on (concrete warms up quickly in the afternoon), and skip the table scraps — many restaurants have rules about food sharing, and human seasonings aren’t great for dogs anyway. If your dog is a barker or prone to lunging at other dogs, ask for an end-of-patio table where they can face a wall rather than a stream of new arrivals. Early seatings tend to be quieter and cooler than the dinner rush, too.
