California’s Central Coast is a sun-splashed adventure hub, especially during the dog days of summer. Start your voyage in Santa Cruz. Seabright State Beach, New Brighton State Beach and Mitchell’s Cove are just a few options for sand and surf, and you’ll also find wineries, farm-fresh dining and cozy accommodations. Follow Highway 1 south for more pup-friendly Central Coast playgrounds.

From Santa Cruz, curve along the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to reach historic downtown Monterey. Leashed dogs are allowed on Monterey State Beach south of the Monterey Tides Hotel. Grab lunch on an outdoor Cannery Row patio, and continue to Carmel-by-the-Sea to visit pet boutiques and Carmel Plaza’s Fountain of Woof doggie drinking fountain. From there, it’s a half-mile, downhill walk to the waves and soft sands of off-leash Carmel Beach.

A few hours south in San Luis Obispo County, Pismo Beach is a classic coastal town that’s home to a hotel beloved by DogTrekker readers. Pismo Lighthouse Suites has dog-friendly suites with pet beds, private patios or balconies, and thoughtful amenities for four-legged friends. The property offers easy access to Pismo Beach, plus grassy outdoor spaces, a heated oceanfront pool, and outdoor games for guests of all ages.
