A tan corgi stands on a sandy beach close to the shoreline, facing right with its tongue lolling out. Gentle waves and blue ocean stretch out behind the dog beneath a clear sky. The setting is open and welcoming for dogs, offering space for running or playing near the water.

Huntington Beach boasts miles of Pacific swells and beaches, including a 1.5-mile off-leash segment. This South Coast community hosts the annual Surf City Surf Dog competition, and it’s packed with pup-friendly dining spots. Overnight along the ocean at Paséa Hotel & Spa, famous for its doggie menus and VIP (Very Important Pet) packages. And don’t miss other dog-gone great southern California activities.

San Diego stands out among South Coast cities that roll out the red carpet for pups. For starters, there’s year-round sunshine and mild temperatures. Plus, dog-friendly beaches unfold around every corner – including Coronado’s North Beach Dog Run, Del Mar Dog Beach, Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, and Ocean Beach Dog Beach. Set where the San Diego River floodway meets the Pacific, it’s among the city’s most popular off-leash parks.

Play fetch at neighborhood dog parks in Mission Valley, Pacific Beach, South Park or Balboa Park. Stroll the studios at Balboa Park’s Spanish Village Art Center with your pup. Book a dog-friendly San Diego harbor cruise. Try standup paddling with your canine companion. When it’s time to refuel, sit down on one of San Diego’s open-air restaurant patios. Many serve special menus for four-legged diners.
