Summer is in full swing at Lake Tahoe, so we’ve scoured both shores to bring you the best dog-friendly beaches where your pup can splash, sniff, and soak up the Sierra sun. From the North Shore’s hidden coves to the South Shore’s sandy strands, here’s your guide—complete with local tips and all the links you need to plan a perfect pet-inclusive getaway.

North Shore highlights

Watermans Landing (Patton Beach), Carnelian Bay

Dogs are welcome on both the waterfront patio and the sandy “Patton Beach” (signed “Carnelian Bay Public Lake Access”) at this popular stand-up paddleboard rental and coffee shop next to Sierra Boat Company. Sip a latte while Fido frolics along the shore—the perfect kick-off to your Lake Tahoe summer adventure.

Carnelian West Beach

Just across the boathouse, Carnelian Beach West shares parking with Gar Woods Grill & Pier (humans only). You’ll find restrooms, picnic tables, and a long stretch of shoreline ideal for fetching and cooling off. Remember to pack water and waste bags—this is a high-traffic spot on Tahoe’s West Shore.

Coon Street Beach, King’s Beach

This little gem boasts grills, picnic areas, restrooms, and a boat launch—plus a designated canine zone. Dogs must stay within clearly marked sections, so keep an eye on signage and your unleashed pup, and enjoy a fun, worry-free afternoon in the sunshine.

Chimney Beach, Nevada Side

Nestled six miles south of Incline Village on Highway 28, Chimney Beach is accessed via a short trail from a tiny pull-off. Here, you and your dog will discover secluded coves and crystal-clear water framed by granite boulders. Arrive early—the small parking area fills fast, and this slice of Tahoe serenity is worth the pre-dawn alarm.

Pebble Beach (“Dog Beach”), West Shore

This pebbly haven sits four miles south of Tahoe City on Highway 89, just north of the USFS Kaspian Campground. Dogs love the smooth stones, and humans love the stunning vista of Emerald Bay. Don’t forget water shoes for paw protection!

South Shore favorites

Kiva Beach, South Lake Tahoe

The South Shore’s best-known dog beach, Kiva’s long sandy shore emerges when water levels drop. Note that local ordinance requires leashes—even for in-water play—and rangers actively patrol. But when your pup zooms through the shallows, you’ll agree it’s worth following the rules for this prime Tahoe spot.

Regan Memorial City Beach

Tucked into one of Tahoe’s oldest neighborhoods, Regan Memorial’s east end welcomes dogs on or off leash (voice control only). Keep your distance from the grassy knoll if a wedding is underway, and you’ll enjoy a quieter beach experience just steps from town.

Nevada Beach

About a mile’s walk from the Highway 50/Kahle Drive lot, this “locals’ secret” beach is wedged between no-dog zones. Follow the bike trail past the pumping station, take the right-hand turn to the water, and discover soft sand and wide open space. Pack snacks—there’s no café here, but the adventure is priceless.

North Beach at Zephyr Cove Resort

Dogs can’t roam the main sandy stretch, but the rocky north end at Zephyr Cove Resort offers clear water and dramatic boulders. Bring sturdy shoes for two-legged climbing and let your pup explore tidal pools—Tahoe’s underwater world is as fascinating to dogs as it is to humans.

Pro tips for your dog-friendly beach day

  • Early Arrival: Tahoe parking fills by 10 AM—beat the crowds at Chimney or Carnelian.
  • Pack Essentials: Fresh water, collapsible bowl, waste bags, and sunscreen for sensitive noses.
  • Leash & Voice Control: Obey local leash laws; off-leash only where explicitly permitted.
  • Protect Paws: Use booties or avoid midday heat on rocky shores like Pebble Beach.

Safety & Etiquette

Always watch for sudden drop-offs, avoid areas with blue-green algae advisories, and greet fellow beachgoers with courtesy. Keeping your dog’s vaccinations current and carrying a basic first-aid kit will ensure a safe, stress-free day by the lake.

Whether you’re chasing waves on the North Shore or lounging under pines on the South Shore, Lake Tahoe’s dog-friendly beaches offer something for every duo. Lace up your hiking boots, leash up your pup, and dive into your next unforgettable Tahoe adventure!
