Ahart Campground sits on the tree-covered banks of the North Fork of the American River near French Meadows Reservoir, about 40 miles from Foresthill high in the Sierra mountains. This is a no-frills operation run by Tahoe National Forest, which means you’re trading amenities for serious backcountry experience and solitude.
The setting itself is the main draw. You get rugged mountain beauty with direct river access, and the fishing and boating opportunities around French Meadows Reservoir are substantial. There are also trail options in the area for hiking with your dog, though you’ll want to check current conditions and any seasonal closures before heading out.
Everything here is truly minimal. There are no services whatsoever—no water spigots, no toilets, nothing. The river water requires purification before you can use it for drinking, so bring a filtration system or plan to pack water with you. Bear-proof food boxes are available, which is essential. You’ll need to pack in and pack out everything, including all waste. This isn’t a place for a casual weekend trip with someone unprepared for backcountry camping.
Getting there requires commitment. From Foresthill, drive east for 36 miles on Mosquito Ridge Road, which is Forest Road 96. The road itself is remote and winding, especially in winter or muddy conditions—not the kind of drive you want to make in bad weather or with a nervous dog who doesn’t do well in cars.
The campground is located on Middle American River, just a mile north of French Meadows Reservoir, putting you in prime territory if you’re serious about fishing, boating, or exploring that part of the high country with your dog. This works best for experienced campers who understand what truly backcountry camping entails and have the gear to handle it.
