Forbes Creek Group Campground sits on the southeast shore of Sugar Pine Reservoir, surrounded by tall cedars and pines with views across the water. The location is genuinely peaceful—you’re far enough from civilization that the forest quiet actually registers, but close enough to trails and swimming spots that you’re not completely isolated.
The campground works well for dogs who like hiking. The North Fork of the American River is nearby with established trails, and there’s direct access to water if your dog wants to cool off. The reservoir itself is visible from most spots, which makes for a nice backdrop while you’re setting up camp.
Sites come with fire rings and picnic tables, and there are barbecue grills available if you want to cook something more substantial than campfire food. Vault toilets are on-site, plus a trailer dump station, which is practical if you’re staying a few days or rolling in an RV. The group campground setup means you can reserve multiple sites together, which works if you’re traveling with other dog-owning friends.
Getting there requires some driving commitment. From I-80, take the Foresthill Road exit and head out for 17 miles to reach the town of Foresthill itself. From there, continue another 9 miles to Sugar Pine Road, turn left, and drive 9 more miles. Take the left fork and you’re looking at 4.5 miles to the boat ramp area, then another 7 miles uphill to the campground. It’s not quick, but it keeps the place from feeling overrun.
The elevation and forest setting mean temperatures are cooler than lower elevations—good to keep in mind if you’re coming from the valley in summer. Bring water for your dog since the campground amenities are pretty basic. The real draw here is the quiet and the access to the river and reservoir, not creature comforts.
