Holcomb Valley Campground

Holcomb Valley Rd., Big Bear, California 92314

Holcomb Valley Campground sits about 5 miles north of Big Bear Lake, tucked into the San Bernardino National Forest where the air gets noticeably cooler and quieter the further you drive from town. The campground has 19 single sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, which means no advance reservations but also no guarantees during peak season—something to keep in mind if you’re planning a summer trip.

The setup is genuinely rustic. You’ll find basic amenities and plenty of space between sites, which dogs tend to appreciate. The surrounding forest gives you immediate access to trails without needing to pack up and drive somewhere else. We hiked a few of the nearby paths with our dog and found the elevation (around 7,000 feet) made for cooler hiking, especially nice if you’re visiting during warmer months. The campground is open year-round, though winter can mean snow and road closures, so checking conditions beforehand matters.

One thing that stood out was how quiet it gets at night. There’s no cell service to speak of, which some people love and others find stressful. If you’re worried about road access before making the drive, the Big Bear Discovery Center can give you current conditions on the roads leading up there. They handle a lot of questions about the area’s seasonal status.

Fishing is possible nearby if that’s your thing, and the campfire setup is straightforward. Bring your own firewood or gather deadfall if allowed. The sites don’t have hookups, so this is tent camping or RV boondocking—you’ll need to be self-sufficient with water. If you’re used to more developed campgrounds with amenities, this will feel different. If you want a quiet forest setting where your dog can roam a bit more freely than in developed parks, it works well for that.
