Inns of Mendocino

10481 Howard St, Mendocino, California

The three properties that make up Inns of Mendocino occupy different corners of Mendocino Village’s historic downtown, each with its own architectural personality. The Packard House retains the Victorian bones of its era, while the JD House carries a more contemporary sensibility, and the Blue Door Inn splits the difference with its cottage charm. Walking between them feels less like checking into a hotel chain and more like staying with someone who owns three houses and has invited you into whichever suits you best. The whole operation carries that bed-and-breakfast feel—breakfast is served daily, and you’ll run into other guests in shared sitting areas—but with the kind of thoughtful amenities (good linens, working WiFi, decent showers) that come from actual hotel operations.

Dogs stay in specific rooms across the properties for a nightly fee per dog. The innkeepers are straightforward about logistics: dogs cannot join you in the breakfast room or common areas, so you’ll need to arrange timing if you want to dine with other guests. That said, the staff treats dogs as actual visitors, not afterthoughts. Rooms with dogs tend to be ground-level or have direct outside access, which makes morning bathroom trips genuinely convenient rather than something requiring negotiation with a staircase.

Mendocino Village sits on a headland at the convergence of Lansing Street and Main Street, with the village proper contained enough that you can walk everywhere. The surrounding terrain ranges from quiet garden paths to the dramatic bluff trails along the coastline—Mendocino Headlands State Park begins practically at the village edge. The inns themselves occupy the quieter residential quarter of town, a few blocks from the main commercial drag. If you’re staying October through April, you’ll find significantly fewer tourists; in summer, Mendocino fills up fast and rooms book out weeks ahead.
