Locally owned by Marin natives Kaity and Roberto Galvez since 2018, LJ's Deli has deep roots in San Rafael‘s sandwich culture. The building itself holds decades of history—back in 1969, Jeff and Vivian opened The Sub Hut in this exact spot, creating the Sub Hut Special that’s still the top seller today. You’ll walk in and see longtime customers stopping by to share memories of eating that same sandwich for over 50 years. There’s something grounding about a place that can trace its legacy back half a century.

What makes LJ’s work is that they didn’t try to reinvent the wheel. The Sub Hut Special remains front and center on the menu, but the current team has expanded the sandwich selection with fresh takes on classic combinations. Everything lands on Bordenave’s Bread, a local bakery choice that matters—it’s the kind of detail that shows the owners care about what goes between those slices.

The deli sits in a walkable part of San Rafael, easy to grab a sandwich and head over to nearby green spaces if you want to eat with your dog. The counter service moves reasonably fast, and the space has that lived-in feel of a place that’s been feeding people through multiple decades. You’re not getting some polished, chain-restaurant version of a deli here. You’re getting the actual thing—a neighborhood spot where people genuinely prefer eating over time.

If you’re passing through San Rafael or live nearby and haven’t stopped in, the Sub Hut Special is worth experiencing just to understand why people keep coming back. It’s the kind of sandwich that travels well too, if you want to grab it and eat elsewhere around town.
