Mendocino Magic is a 600-acre private campground and outdoor events destination located near Laytonville, California. Historically a logging camp and later a commercial trout farm, the property has transformed into a recreational haven for those seeking a connection with nature. The site features the pristine Holland Reservoir—the largest privately held water reservoir in Northern California—offering opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and catch-and-release fishing. With miles of trails winding through mountainous hillsides, manzanita groves, and oak forests, guests can choose from various accommodations, including traditional campsites, furnished luxury canvas tents, and cabins.
The campground emphasizes fire safety due to the high wildfire risk in California; campfires and charcoal grills are prohibited, but propane grills are available for rent. Staff-operated fire pits are provided on weekends, weather permitting. The Central Camper’s Kitchen is equipped with gas grills and provides a communal space for meal preparation, while outdoor hot showers and portable toilets are available for guest convenience. Mendocino Magic also hosts private events such as weddings, corporate retreats, and workshops on the grounds.
If you’re bringing your dog, they’re welcome at campsites and weekend rentals, but must stay on leash at all times. You’ll be responsible for cleaning up after them and packing out all waste. The property is home to wildlife including bears, wild pigs, scorpions, and rattlesnakes, so constant supervision of your dog is important given the risks these animals could pose. Note that dogs are generally not permitted at private events and weddings to prevent disruptions.
The campground emphasizes environmental stewardship through a “Leave only Paw Prints” policy—you’ll need to pack out all trash and recycling since there’s no on-site trash service. If you’d rather not manage garbage yourself, you can pay for staff to haul sorted waste. Guests appreciate the relatively undeveloped feel of the property, especially the trail system and reservoir access, making it a good base for exploring the Mendocino County backcountry with your dog.
