Located in Pollock Pines, El Dorado County, within the picturesque Gold Country region, the Shoreline Hike at Sly Park offers a delightful outdoor experience for both humans and dogs. This 8-mile hike around Jenkinson Lake, also known as Sly Park Lake, follows a marked trail that meanders along the reservoir’s shoreline, treating hikers to breathtaking views of the tranquil waters and surrounding forest.

The trail itself is rated as an easy level 1-2 hike, making it accessible for most fitness levels. While most of the route is designated for hiking, there are a few multi-use sections where you’ll want to keep your dog close and stay alert for mountain bikers and equestrians. The path winds through pine and oak forest, dipping down to the water’s edge periodically, which is nice if your dog gets hot and wants to wade in the lake. The terrain is generally well-maintained and not overly technical, though it can get muddy in spots during wetter months.

If you want to make this more than a day trip, the Sly Park Recreation Area offers camping and RV facilities right there at Jenkinson Lake. Dogs are welcome at campsites, so you can settle in for a weekend and break the hike into sections if you prefer. The area also has a boat launch and picnic spots scattered throughout, giving you flexibility in how you spend your time.

The hike is especially pleasant in spring and fall when temperatures stay moderate and the lake isn’t crowded with summer recreation. Bring plenty of water for both you and your dog—there are a few streams crossing the trail, but relying on them as your only water source isn’t ideal. A good spot for a lunch break is near the dam area, where you’ll find some shade and a nice view of the water.
