Yosemite Lakes has been welcoming campers since the 1920s, and it remains one of the closest lodging options to Yosemite National Park’s West Gate—just five miles away. If you’re driving from the Bay Area or Sacramento, you’re looking at about three hours to reach this Groveland property, making it accessible for long weekends or extended trips.
The resort sits along the south fork of the Tuolumne River, which runs right through the property and gives you immediate access to swimming, fishing, and gold panning if you’re interested in trying your hand at it. The river itself is a real draw—you can actually see it from many of the campsites, and it creates a natural cooling effect on hot days.
They’re open year-round, which is helpful if you’re planning an off-season trip to the mountains. Just keep in mind that from September through April, services are limited, so you’ll want to stock up on supplies before arriving during those months. Winter visits mean fewer amenities but also fewer crowds, and the river valley takes on a quieter character.
Since the property has been operating for over a century, it has the feel of a well-established retreat that’s been refined over time rather than a newer development. The long history here means the grounds are mature and established, with plenty of shade in many areas.
Getting there from Sacramento, take Highway 99 South to J-7, then head east on J-7 to Highway 120. Continue east about seven miles past Buck Meadows and watch for signs on the right. If you’re coming from Fresno, the route is more involved—head north on Highway 99 to Merced, take J-59 north to La Grange, then Highway 132 east to Coulterville, J-20 east for about 13 miles until you hit Highway 120, turn right, and go another 13 miles to the property signs.
