A peaceful, dog-friendly introduction to giant trees
Calaveras Big Trees State Park offers a rare combination: the chance to stand among enormous sequoias while still enjoying a dog-friendly outing. While pets aren’t allowed on the dirt trails that run through the North Grove and South Grove, dogs can join you in many other areas, and you’ll still experience the atmosphere, size and quiet majesty of these ancient trees.
The park’s developed areas—paved trails near the visitor center, picnic grounds, campground loops and parking areas—are all dog-friendly with a leash. These zones sit in and around the North Grove, which means you’ll still see towering sequoias within easy walking distance. Many visitors are surprised how much scenery they can enjoy without stepping onto restricted dirt paths. The filtered light, soft forest air and sense of scale are unmistakable.
Seasonal changes shape the experience. Winter brings snow that blankets the groves and creates a serene, almost cathedral-like calm. Spring brings blooming dogwoods and cool temperatures ideal for wandering paved loops. Summer draws crowds, but early mornings and evenings remain pleasant. Fall is a standout season, with crisp air and bright foliage that contrasts beautifully with the sequoias’ reddish bark.
Leashes are required everywhere dogs are allowed, and the rule makes sense. While you can’t take dogs on the main sequoia trails, Calaveras Big Trees still provides a meaningful introduction to giant trees.
