Located on the South Fork of the American River in Lotus, Henningsen Lotus Park spans 51 acres and genuinely has something for everyone—including dogs. The river setting means plenty of shade from cottonwoods and oaks, which matters when you’re out walking on a warm day.

The park’s layout works well for dog owners. There’s a boat launch and beach area right along the water where you can let your dog see the river action, though they’ll need to stay leashed. The sandy beach gives you a nice spot to sit while your dog takes in the scene. The adjacent enclosed pavilion hosts everything from community classes to weddings, so depending on the day, the energy and crowd level can vary quite a bit.

Beyond the river area, the park has two soccer fields and a lighted softball and little league complex that runs year-round youth sports programs. These facilities mean the park can get busy on game days and practice schedules, so if you prefer a quieter walk with your dog, mornings or weekday afternoons tend to work better than weekends during sports seasons.

The whole park sits in a pleasant spot with good river access and enough open space that you’re not feeling cramped. Since it’s open seven days a week from 8 a.m. until dusk, you’ve got flexibility with timing. The combination of river views, open fields, and tree cover makes it feel more like a destination than just a quick neighborhood walk.

Dogs must stay leashed throughout the park, and you’ll need to clean up after yours. The river location means water access for your dog to splash in or drink from, which on hot days is a real bonus.
