Stumpy Meadow Reservoir

Wentworth Springs Rd, Eldorado National Forest, Georgetown, California 95667

Stumpy Meadows Reservoir sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Georgetown, surrounded by dense conifer forests that make you feel miles away from civilization even though you’re not far from town. The reservoir itself is the main draw—the water is clear and cold, and the whole area has that quiet, peaceful feeling you’re looking for when you want to escape.

The campground here welcomes dogs, and plenty of people bring theirs. You can set up right near the water if you get a good spot, which means your dog can cool off in the lake during the day and you get that constant view while you’re sitting around camp. The water’s cold enough that most dogs appreciate it on hot days. Trails wind around the reservoir and through the surrounding forest, ranging from easy shoreline walks to more challenging hikes if you want to push yourself. Just bring extra water—the elevation and exposure mean both you and your dog will go through it faster than you expect.

Fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are all popular here, though you’ll want to check current conditions before heading out. The campground itself is quiet and well-maintained. Sites have fire rings and picnic tables, and the whole setup feels like actual camping rather than a crowded recreation area.

Keep your dog on leash where required and pack out what you pack in. The forest and water stay nice because people respect them. The drive from Georgetown takes you up into real mountain country—ponderosa pines, granite outcroppings, that whole Gold Country landscape. If you’re coming from the valley, it’s a solid spot for a weekend trip where you and your dog actually get to disconnect and move around without worrying about crowds or restrictions. Bring firewood with you or buy it locally, and don’t expect cell service.
