The California capital makes a great jumping-off place for DogTrekkers poised for a trip to high country. Snuggle into a dog-friendly hotel, dine on a restaurant patio with your pup at your side, take a scenic hike on the American River Parkway, and you’ll be primed to head “up the hill” for your next stop on your high Sierra road trip.
For a taste of Sac’s booming restaurant and cultural scene, park your chariot, leash up and explore one of the city’s main eat-and-drink corridors. Just south of downtown, R Street between 10th and 15th has evolved into a happening restaurant row, with numerous establishments sporting dog-friendly patios. Like the raw-fish salad known as poke? At Fish Face Poke Bar in the Warehouse Artist Lofts building, you customize your order at the counter (Coco will have to wait outside) and consume it at an outdoor picnic table while watching denizens of the very artsy neighborhood go by. Nearby Iron Horse Tavern, Shoki Ramen House, Fox & Goose, Burgers & Brew, Shady Lady Saloon and Dos Coyotes are among other eateries welcoming dogs at their outdoor tables.
In Midtown (east of downtown), stroll down J, K or L streets and let serendipity be your guide. Dog-friendly places to pause for refreshment include Tapa the World (a good paella lunch special), Der Biergarten (40 brews on tap, plus sausages and sides), Café Bernardo … the list goes on and on. And don’t overlook Sac’s many dog- and family-welcoming craft breweries, which are growing more numerous by the month. A favorite, south of downtown across from the Sacramento City College campus, is Track 7, where little kids as well as dogs have fun while their parents socialize with old and new friends.
