Muttville Senior Dog Rescue
Muttville’s mission is to change the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs and to create better lives for them through rescue, foster, adoption and hospice.
Muttville’s mission is to change the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs and to create better lives for them through rescue, foster, adoption and hospice.
Lily’s Legacy’s mission is to provide a safe and loving home for large breed senior dogs (50+ pounds, 7 years or older) who have been displaced from their homes and/or abandoned for any reason.
Senior dogs are the ones least likely to be rescued or adopted, and are most at risk of being euthanized in shelters.
November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month, a month dedicated to helping older pets find loving homes. Senior pets are the last to be adopted from shelters, leaving them with an increased risk of euthanasia. We thank all of the DogTrekkers who took our challenge to raise funds during the fifth annual Saving Senior Dogs week and encourage those who haven’t yet to give this month.
By Chris Pitts, RVT, of Broadway Animal Hospital.
Our senior dog friends can be sensitive to change. Therefore, preparation is key to traveling with our older companions.
Building a sense of familiarity for your dog while on your trip is imperative to keeping him comfortable.
Muttville founder Sheri Franklin was named a Top 10 CNN hero in 2016 for her efforts in changing the way people think about and treat older dogs. Her organization’s goal is to create better lives for aging canines through rescue, foster, adoption and hospice.
They may be getting up in years, but senior dogs still want to have fun. Getting out and about with their beloved folks is a big part of keeping them happy and healthy.
Just ask Shelley, who will celebrate her 16th birthday on May 1. She's one of the resident dogs at the Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary, and takes her responsibilities as office supervisor quite seriously. From the time she arrived at age 14, Shelley’s hind legs were a bit wobbly, but it didn’t slow her down. Then, a few months ago, her hind-end weakness reached a point where she couldn't stand up. Shelley became depressed. Luckily, a kind benefactor got her a set of custom wheels, which quickly restored her zest for life and access to the outside world.
Dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing senior dogs, Lily’s Legacy has founded a campaign—Saving Senior Dogs Week— to raise public awareness of homeless senior dogs, the joy of adopting them, and to support of senior dog-rescue organizations around the state.
It's been an eventful year so far for the good folks at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. In July, Muttville founder and executive director Sherri Franklin was named a CNN Hero (one of 25) for her work as an example of "everyday people making a difference." In this case, to thousands of senior dogs who once faced a grim future, and to the people who've come to see them as the loving companions they are.
August was a record month for Muttville, with 97 senior dogs finding forever homes. And they just rescued senior dog #4,000. That would be Susie here, a 9-year-old Chihuahua mix whose outgoing personality and loving disposition win friends wherever she goes.

Here are some answers to common questions about senior dogs.
This San Diego-based senior dog rescue is dedicated to saving one senior dog at a time and educating young minds to create a legacy of compassion and advocacy.
Last year marked some milestones (like 912 senior dogs saved in 2016!) and accolades for Muttville, as founder Sherri Franklin was named a Top 10 CNN Hero in the CNN Heroes program. Since its founding, Muttville has drastically changed the way senior dogs are treated in the shelter system—once seen as "unadoptable," they're now valued, and the ripple effects extend out into the community.
By Dr. Angela Gaeto, DVM, of the Helen Woodward Animal Center community in San Diego County.
Adult and in particular senior dogs are often overlooked at shelters in favor of boisterous puppies. However, there are many benefits to adopting an adult or senior pet.

Mobility can be a challenge that faces all of us, two legged and four, following injury, surgery and with age. Humans are fortunate to have a multitude of devices to prevent falling and aid in moving safely about our homes. Did you know there are many options for your dog as well?

Big old dogs who find themselves homeless face an especially bleak future in most shelters just because they're seniors. For those lucky enough to be taken in by Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary, however, life takes a big turn for the better.
When it comes to traveling with senior dogs, the good folks at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue have accumulated a lot of practical wisdom over the years. So we asked them to share it with us. Here are their tips for making your next DogTrek fun for all.
What to Pack
License, rabies tag and meds.
Comforts of home: heir favorite bed/blanket so they feel cozy and secure in the car and at your destination. The cushier the better for those older joints.
Extra food, so you don't have to switch to something your dog's tummy isn't used to if you have to extend your trip. Also bring plenty of the water he's used to from home to avoid stomach upset.
A carrier, even if you don't turn out to need it much. If your dogs get restless in the car, for example, they'll be much safer in their carrier, and you won't be a distracted driver.
An old towel or cleanup wipes; bring an extra sheet to cover the bedspread at your destination. If your dog has incontinence issues, pack extra pee pads. Especially recommended: reusable/washable hospital underpads.

When most people think about adopting a dog, they automatically think of puppies. There’s good reason for that: puppies are adorable, and everyone loves them. But what if you don’t want to deal with the messes and chewing? What if you want a dog who is already house-trained and knows how to behave? That’s where older dogs come in.

One of Kayla's favorite walks as a 'senior' dog was along the San Rafael waterfront adjacent to Loch Lomond Marina. She began walking this trail as a puppy some 14 years ago. Back then, this was a rough rock-strewn path that leads around the spit that ends at the entrance to the marina.
Kayla's favorite walk along the water.
With the development of the new housing development known as The Strand, the path has been leveled and then paved, with benches and tables placed along the path. This is the perfect walk for any dog, especially senior dogs (and of course those of us who are senior dog walkers). A perfect day includes stopping by the adjacent Andy's Market, picking up lunch, and heading for the parking area. This is a posted 'dogs on leash' area.

Actress and animal advocate Doris Day celebrated her 88th birthday this year, and it will come as no surprise that her love of animals and highly practical commitment to their welfare in the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which turns 35 this year, is as strong as ever. Some of the dogs who land at Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue were found as strays or come from bad situations. Young Lab/border collie mix Titus wandered the streets of Madera before being rescued; Silicon Valley girl Bailey, a 1-year-old chocolate Lab, was in a stairwell at Intel, but nobody claimed her. Others, especially the seniors, have had long and happy lives with the same people, but a job loss or family tragedy can change everything.

We only stayed for 30 minutes because their paws aren't snow tough, but that was enough as they were exhausted when we got home!"

BONES (Better Options for NEglected Strays) in Covelo was started by a dedicated group of volunteers in rural Mendocino County who realized that between the area’s economic issues and its isolation from animal services, critters in need were often in dire straits. They set about rescuing local pets and farm animals, and were soon so successful that they were able to start taking in some from other areas as well, not to mention launching a highly effective spay/neuter program.
"A dog can make a house a home," says SF's Family Dog Rescue, which has been helping families of all sorts and dogs of all sorts, regardless of barriers, find each other since 2010. Meet Marco.
As part of its lifesaving work, the San Francisco SPCA provides a safe, caring haven for many dogs who'd otherwise fall through the cracks because of age, breed, medical condition, or sheer bad luck. Just like Marco here. Whether at one of the SFSPCA's facilities or in the care of one of its many foster homes, they soak up the TLC — and reveal their true selves — while they wait for the human of their dreams.
Meet Bart, a large, easygoing senior guy who may be a bit past his crazy running-around stage but is enjoying excellent health in his golden years. He's looking for people who share his taste for the more relaxed sort of leisure activities: lounging in the sun, watching TV, and going for the occasional quiet stroll. Other dogs? He likes 'em.
If Bart sounds like the guy for you, get in touch with his friends at Jameson Animal Rescue Ranch to set up a meeting! Send an email to Deassa Binstock at deassa@jamesonrescueranch.org to get things going.
"Our philosophy with older pets is like this," says Scott Delucchi of Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, "They give us so many good years. When they enter their twilight years, it's our turn to give back and be there for them until the very end when they need our love, patience and compassion most." Kensey here is a senior at 10 years old, but as you'll see from this video of her frolicking in Peninsula Humane's innovative indoor dog park, she's still got plenty of energy.
Recently, the good folks at Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue noticed that a growing number of the dogs who needed them came with health issues that were treatable, but often pricey. They also were encountering many elderly Labs who suddenly found themselves homeless and facing a bleak future due to their people's life changes. GGLRR responded by launching a Special Needs/Senior Fund, dedicated to getting these deserving critters into safe, loving homes where they can be happy, healthy and part of the family again. Currently looking for a place to spend his golden years is the lovely Harley, who is s 11 years old, in excellent health, and ready for fun.

"If they're adoptable, I don't care about the age," says Kim Kuenlen of Nor Cal Aussie Rescue, adding that having the sanctuary in Grass Valley allows her to keep each dog safely until exactly the right home comes along. Thus current residents range from lovable 5-month-old red merle puppies Apple and Flynn, whose respective owners couldn't deal with their Aussie energy, to 5-year-old tricolor mini-Aussie Bailey, who lived happily with a 2-year-old child until the child developed allergies, to the beautiful blue merle 13-year-old Sammie, who lost her family when her people went into senior housing, and now seeks a comfy couch and a person to share it with.
In 2015, some dedicated animal lovers and veteran rescuers looked around at the state of things in Sonoma County and thought, what can we do to help? Dogwood Animal Rescue was born, with the mission to provide support to animals by rescuing, rehoming and helping animals in need of spay and neuter, and providing education about animal welfare to the community.
Founded at the height of San Francisco's AIDS epidemic when food-bank volunteers banded together to provide support for their clients with pets, Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS)is still going strong — and keeping families together. Many dogs and cats end up in shelters because their people are going through health and/or financial problems, and it's a loss all around: The animals are traumatized at best, and the humans lose loved companions just when they need them most. That's not happening for the 800 dogs, cats, and other animals who belong to PAWS' current 630 clients; thanks to the organization and its corps of volunteers, they all get walked, fed, taken to the vet, and otherwise cared for as needed.
Allow a full day—or more, if time permits—for the long but scenic drive back to Sacramento via Highway 120 over Tioga Pass Road through Yosemite National Park.
Our good friends at the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA are always coming up with creative ways to help pets, wildlife, and the people who love them. One innovative program that's been quite successful is TAILS (Transitioning Animals Into Loving Situations), a partnership between Peninsula Humane and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office that pairs minimum-security inmates with shelter dogs, especially those dogs who need some extra attention and TLC.
Back in 2008, Zach Skow was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease, the result of lifelong alcohol abuse. And it was the prospect of rescuing dogs—specifically, dogs who were as scorned, despised and rejected as he was in that state—that made him decide to get healthy and live. He soon launched Tehachapi-based Marley's Mutts, to rescue and heal the dogs who didn't fare so well in the system: "The giant mastiffs, the mangled and mangy mutts, the aggressive and the scared." And, based on his own experience, helping the dogs heal and move on to a better life had a way of healing the human helpers as well.
Currently healing up in a foster home is the lovely Malala here, a former street dog rescued from the meat trade in Thailand and now, at 6, learning to be an American dog. After spending her youth on the run, Malala is now ready for a life of leisure, and seeks a comfy couch and a loving human.
The call came in to Leave No Paws Behind — a young husky, barely a year old, had landed in a high-kill Southern California shelter in such rough shape that they were going to euthanize her immediately if rescue didn't turn up. No way, said LNPB founder Toby Wisneski, AKA Ms. Toby, and Miracle was soon safe and getting vet care. Now, much revived from her sad state, Miracle is headed for her forever home.
Happy 2014 adopters. Photo: Maddie's Fund
Good news for homeless pets around the Bay: It's the return of Maddie's Pet Adoption Days! Named in honor of the little miniature schnauzer who brought joy to the Duffield family in the days when Dave Duffield was first launching PeopleSoft, Maddie's Fund is the result of his promise to help other dogs and other families have the same happiness.

Strolling on the beach. Chilling on the couch. Mai Tai is definitely up for both those things and can’t wait to meet you to discuss it all. This 2-year-old boxer girl doesn’t let her tripod status slow her down a bit, and her zest for life is matched by her good manners. Adults, kids, dogs, puppies, she loves them all. Restaurants? Coffee shops? Car rides? She’s your perfect companion.
Mai Tai may have had a hard time before she landed at San Diego-based California Labradors, Retrievers and More Rescue, but those days are definitely behind her and she’s ready to blend effortlessly into life with her new family. Learn more about her here.

By Roxanne & Dave Kendrick, Co-founders of DogTrekker.com
The story of Kayla, DogTrekker.com’s late and much missed Director of Barketing, was one of the best-read newsletter stories of 2016. Thanks to all our readers who read her story and sent their best wishes. It’s been more than six months since Kayla crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and time for us to find our next furr-ever dog. We are excited to introduce her to all of you.
Kayla passes the leash off to Maya
We raised Kayla from a puppy after getting her from a reputable breeder, some eight years before we launched DogTrekker.com. Even though we were aware of and often donated to rescue groups, we didn't know about the magnitude of the problems with over-breeding, lack of spaying and neutering, and the fact that millions of dogs were being euthanized every year in shelters. Then we met the wonderful founders and volunteers at hundreds of California shelters, rescue and adoption organizations. We witnessed their selfless work firsthand, and were enlightened.
Maya on her office lunch break
Meet Maya, a 5-year old, 70-pound English Labrador retriever recently adopted from Monterey Bay Labrador Retriever Rescue. Maya hailed from dog-crazy Carmel and was surrendered after her owner passed away. As with any dog being rehomed, Maya came to us with some issues. She is a bit tough on the leash and very nervous when riding in the car—not the best situation for a company and family constantly on the road. On the flip side, she gets along great with dogs large and small, dog people and not, even in uniforms. She doesn’t bark excessively and doesn’t beg for food, which isn’t very “Lab-like” at all.
First night at home!
When Judy Kreger, Founder and CEO of Monterey Bay Lab Rescue, sent us pictures of Maya, we were a bit hesitant—older but not that old? Large but not too large? Car anxiety? Leash issues? But something in her eyes—it’s always in the eyes—spoke to both of us. Everything else, we knew, could be handled with training. So we decided to take a trip to Maya’s foster home in Santa Cruz, and it was love at first sight. We left shortly after and brought Maya to her new home.
